Wow. I was quite impressed with the material this week. I think maybe because it was something I understood. It is peculiar how different theories are presented for different subjects. I learned about Freud, as well as Plato, in English 201 (History of Theory and Criticism), so I was familiar with their ideas, but it emphasis was put on different things. In my English class, what mattered in Plato's cave analagy was the fact that the shadow of the chair was a representation of reality, and far removed from the truth ... much how he thought art and literature were just representations of the truth. In class it was used as an analagy for birth and how leaving the cave was live leaving the womb (painful).

The M.I.T 'Zine is a load of crap. There is no other way for me to describe it. I don't understand what I am supposed to learn from it. It is supposed to be artistic and edgy, yet I find myself cringing at most of what is printed in there. I could care less for poetry written about menstruation, or whether some guy wants to fuck Claire Huxtable. It is mostly pointless and a huge waste of time to produce, as well as read.

I quite enjoyed the article about the butchered English language, coming from a student who refers to his household as the Omega Bodacious Maternity/Fraternity. This goes well with my idea that most students in M.I.T want to give off the illusion of being intelligent, when they're just as retarded as the rest of us.

I also love the fact that when someone stands up to criticize the 'Zine (as Laura did on WebCT), the only response that the person who claims to love the English language could muster up was "IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT WRITE SOMETHING YOURSELF."

I love M.I.T

wow, its been ages since i've written an entry, but honestly, i have had nothing to say. this class continues to confuse me, and i find myself zoning out when doing the readings and attending lecture.

the whole fashion thing got me interested again though. i love clothes. if i could do one thing forever, it would be shop. in tutorial today we were discussing something that reminded me of something that i had written in my mall assignment. it was about how even "alternative" designers exploited the current trends in their work, but just put a different spin on them. at the mall i noticed that no matter what "trendy" store you walked into, they were all selling the same crap. they just repackaged it to target their main focus group. you could find the same stuff at le chateau, bootlegger, boathouse, and backstage in masonville, even though le chateau caters to club kids, bootleggers to casuals, boathouse to skater/surfers, and backstage to rockers.

i can't deal with MIT. i think i'm going to switch out of it next year, or just switch schools all together. everyone in this program tries too hard to appear "enlightened" and "alternative", when really they're just pulling crap out of their asses and hoping someone will call them brilliant.

Wow, I'm a little late in recounting my feelings regarding the whole mall experience. I really only have a few things to say ...

1. Does EVERYONE only shop at American Eagle? I remember when it was such a preppie store that no one would even touch. I used to go to Buffalo and shop there and come home sporting my AE sweatshirts and logo ts and people used to look at me weird.

2. What is with the HUGE line at Dairy Queen/Orange Julius at ALL times? I swear, I was sitting in the food court for an hour and there was never less than 7 people in the line at any given time.

3. No student means to shop at Sears ... the only reason they get any business from us is because people still think the bus that comes back to campus stops there. After we realize that they have a new bus terminal out by The Bay ... we have to wander back in through Sears, and the trip is so long and upsetting that we feel the need to look around to make ourselves feel better.
